WasteFree in the United States

Tackling Urban Ocean Waste from the Heart of San Francisco

Donate Now

Protecting Oceans from City Streets

In the heart of the Bay Area, WasteFree is turning local action into global ocean impact — one cleanup, one classroom, one policy change at a time.

San Francisco may be known for its tech innovation and sweeping views of the Pacific, but it also faces an urgent environmental challenge: plastic pollution. With its dense population, complex waste systems, and proximity to the ocean, the city is both a hotspot for pollution and a powerful launchpad for solutions.

WasteFree’s team in San Francisco focuses on bridging the gap between land-based waste and marine health. Through hands-on cleanups, educational outreach in schools, and data-driven advocacy, we help prevent plastic from entering the ocean in the first place. Whether it’s cigarette butts from sidewalks or microplastics from stormwater runoff, every item we remove or intercept keeps marine life safer.

Our local partnerships — with grassroots organizations, city officials, and volunteers — allow us to tailor our work to urban realities while staying rooted in our global mission. From Ocean Beach to the Bay Bridge, we’re proving that urban conservation isn’t just possible — it’s essential.

Clean Harbors, Healthier Oceans

In the ports of San Francisco, abandoned fishing gear and microplastic runoff pose a serious risk to marine life. Wastefree launched a pilot to clear harbor debris using diver-led cleanups and AI-powered waste tracking. The project not only reduced ghost gear by 70%, but also created new standards for green port policies across California. What started in SF now inspires change far beyond the Bay.

Restoring Bay Area Beaches

Plastic waste doesn’t just wash ashore — it strangles ecosystems. In San Francisco, Wastefree works with local volunteers and schools to clean up beaches from Ocean Beach to Crissy Field. Together, we’ve removed over 15 tons of waste, revived native plant zones, and helped restore safe nesting areas for vulnerable shorebirds. Community action here shows how local engagement fuels global impact.

The Waterways Are Under Threat

Plastic waste and ghost gear are choking U.S. coastlines — harming sea turtles, polluting food chains, and threatening both ocean life and local communities.

Plastic in Bay Currents
Tonnes of plastic waste are flushed from cities like San Francisco into the bay and ocean every year. Carried by strong tides and wind, it ends up on remote shorelines, in the stomachs of seabirds, and in the nests of sea turtles.
Ghost Nets Off the Coast
Discarded or lost fishing nets — also known as ghost gear — continue catching marine life long after use. Sea lions, turtles, and fish get trapped and die, and divers risk injury during retrievals.
Toxins in Tribal Waters
Runoff from agriculture and industry leads to rising levels of pollution in estuaries and rivers. These toxins harm traditional fishing grounds and threaten Indigenous ways of life.

Protecting Our Waters

Wastefree tackles plastic pollution at the source. Through local partnerships, policy engagement, and community action, we protect marine ecosystems — permanently.

In San Francisco, Wastefree supports and strengthens local systems that stop plastic before it enters the ocean. Our approach goes beyond beach cleanups: we work upstream.

Our teams collaborate with municipal partners, port authorities, and waste management companies to fix the broken loop of consumption and disposal. Together, we’re developing zero-waste systems, improving recycling flows, and pushing for stricter regulations on single-use plastic.

At the same time, we empower coastal communities through public awareness campaigns, educational programs in schools, and direct-action initiatives. Every campaign is rooted in local engagement and measurable impact. Whether it’s reducing ghost gear from fisheries or rerouting plastic waste from storm drains, the goal is clear: resilient coasts and thriving habitats.

“Real impact starts before the plastic reaches the beach. Wastefree helps us make long-term changes — not just cosmetic fixes.”

Bay Cleanup Coalition

Wastefree initiated a citywide collaboration with fishing cooperatives and the Port of SF to remove ghost nets from the Bay. Over 12 tons of marine debris have been cleared — and we’re just getting started.

Smart Storm Drains

In partnership with local engineers, we piloted filtration systems in 6 neighborhoods to prevent microplastics from entering the Bay through runoff — a model now being adopted citywide.

Turning Commitment into Action

From polluted coastlines to endangered marine wildlife — our projects fight back against ocean waste with courage, collaboration, and measurable results.

One Plastic Bottle at a Time

What started as a weekend cleanup in the SF Marina has grown into a city-recognized program. Thanks to Wastefree’s data and local voices, the city council passed a regulation limiting disposable food containers near water bodies.

Zero-Waste Goes Academic

At UC Berkeley, Wastefree supported students in transforming their entire graduation event into a plastic-free celebration. The model inspired a permanent waste policy for university events campus-wide.
